His mother shouted through the broken kitchen window ” What are you doing?”

“She would not understand even if I told her ” he thought to himself.

His mother shouted again, from the unpainted kitchen ” What are you doing ?”

Vamu wiped the sweat from his thick mustache type brows with his left hand, then lifted the axe in his right hand and pointed at the Jacaranda tree.

“I am cutting down this tree” he replied in a voice filled with an air of hate .

“Why?” she asked in horror.

Vamu looked at the tree and responded with angry voice ” Because it is not indigenous, it does not belong here!”
